5 Things I Consumed Last Week(🍛for💭)
on genius loci, careers aren't ladders, on earth we are briefly gorgeous, supersensorium, nothing and MiHeSo
This issue is a typical mix of all things Hummingbird - a podcast on career trajectories to inspire you, an Oscar nominated animated film to make you pause and reflect, a neuroscientific case for art in the age of Netflix, a critique on internet, another podcast to contemplate on the eminence of language, in other news, nut butters and much more. Some ‘Food for Thought’ for you.
Note: If my emails end up in the ‘promotions’ tab, please move them to the inbox so you don’t miss out. Don’t forget to subscribe and join 490+ readers!
Genuis Loci | Adrien Mérigeau | Psyche
All around me, I find chaos. It’s always there. It just changes in scale. You can’t stop it. You can only watch it.
The term ‘genius loci’ originates from Roman mythology and refers to the protective spirit of a place. Do you feel the shift in your inner spirit when you move places?
Genius Loci is experimental, impressionistic, more interested in the subtleties and vagaries of mood than in the clarity of plot.
Moving from a city where I could only hear tick-tock of my pink clock to a city which is a live model of the word ‘hustle’ in motion was a big switch for me. This short film with it’s dainty details and an eloquent soundtrack traces the journey of a woman as she progresses her way to the eccentricities of an urban city. Maybe you will relate to it too.
Careers Aren’t Ladders, They’re Jungle Gyms | Sheryl Sandberg | Stanford GSB
In the future, there will be no female leaders. There will just be leaders.
If you are looking for some ignition to go get it all, tune into this. From beginning her career when computers weren't even existent to working as the COO of Facebook for over 14 years, Sheryl’s wisdom will blow your mind.
Sheryl Sandberg advised students against making a strict plan for their careers, because “you’re going to miss all the good stuff — all the good stuff hasn’t been invented yet!”
She is also the writer of Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead and Option B : an odyssey on dealing with grief, loss and building resilience (also my current read) - relatable, raw and reverent.
Exit the supersensorium | The Intrinsic Perspective
To understand why we as upright apes are so drawn to facts that aren’t facts, to events that never happened, to useless objects like paintings, to fictions, we have to go back to our hirsute ancestors and ask: why did something as “useless” as dreaming start in the first place?
Erik Hoel in this newsletter guides us through the evolution of human allegiance towards fictional stories and how it is influenced by dreams but not just dreams - the neuroscience behind it and concludes it with how art functions as a locus for transcendence in this internet age.
Ocean Vuong : A Life Worthy of Our Breath | On Being Podcast
My first acquaintance to Ocean Vuong was through his book ‘On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous’ - a book that explores migration, queerness, loving navigation of being a Vietnamese boy.
We often tell our students, The future’s in your hands. But I think the future is actually in your mouth.
A podcast that traverses through Ocean’s journey as an immigrant and navigating an American life, his writing process, the nitty-gritti’s of the essence of language and much more.
Nothing | Secretorum
When I’m listlessly killing time on the internet, there is nothing. The mind does not wander. I am not there. That rectangular hole spews out war crimes and cutesy comedies and affirmations and porn, all of it mixed together into one general-purpose informational goo.
Based on the startling ‘Dead Internet Theory’ which enshrines on the uselessness, the twopenny-halfpenny content and the alluring gaudiness of connection enabled by Internet, this critique/propehcy/prediction (decide for yourself) will make you question so many things.

An Honest Look
MiHeSo (Mind Health Soul)- Redefining nut butters. When I thought about nut butters - almond, peanut etc. I thought of only sweet flavors but MiHeSo’s Mint Chutney and Barbecue Spread is beyond my imagination. They offer 4 varieties of overnight oats - sugar & gluten free.
I used their Coffee nut spread to make some Granola bars and the Chocolate nut spread for layering pancakes ( refer cover picture).
The fact that the oil floats on top & the spread is thick is a testament that it is sweetened with jaggery, jaggery solidifies the spread unlike Sundrop’s PB. I am planning to use it as a post-workout snack.
Things I’m doing lately
I am watching this on Netflix.
