5 Things I Consumed Last Week (let's tessellate 👩💻)
on inarticulable knowledge, only murders, poor little substack, sense of control and pastéis de nata
Hello Nello!
I spent this weekend walking across the green and bright lanes of Goa,India; catching up with a lot of colleagues and having divine food experiences. Thanks to the reset and the breathing space to think less about work and spend some time exposing myself to the sun (gosh, it was bright and sweaty). I have got a few surprises for you to explore in galore (that rhymed well). Title inspired by the OG Alt-J:
inarticulable knowledge | bookbear express
What drives you? What makes you kick? What lights the fire within you? What makes you, you?
On most occassions when I am asked this question, I keep fumbling out random answers that seem correct or at least that I think distinguishes myself from everyone else but deep down I know it’s not a great answer and that’s exactly what this essay is about.
Many people who are talented in their various fields have access to insight they can’t share with others. They simply see something we can’t. They try to describe it—picture any Paris Review interview—and often hearing them talk about their process is interesting and informative. But they’re unable to describe the core thing—what gives them the story, what makes them able to write.
But if we don’t live with the understanding that there are many inarticulable forms of knowledge, we miss out on hidden magic. We reject complexity. And the way we live becomes less beautiful, less nuanced as a result. Sometimes everything that’s valuable is contained in the part of the experience we can’t describe.
a fleeting sense of control | anji’s mind
Fancy some overthinking but in an alluring graphic format? check this out. I have been following Anji’s doodles for a while now and absolutely love every comic she puts out. Too relatable, too real!
My Poor Little Substack | Margaret Atwood
I feel guilty about you, little Substack. You’ve been languishing, unwritten, unread, wondering if I’m mad at you. Was it something I said? No, I have just been a bad and unworthy Substacker.
But I have some very good excuses.
I have been on Substack for more than a year now and have seen many writers drift towards paid subscriptions (which they should) which usually starts with a pitch post on what to expect and most of them are template-ized except this one.
Extremely funny (legit put a smile to my face), not pretentious, well though out.
Only Murders in the Building | Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar
I am hooked onto this show! Murder mystery, thriller, funny, charming and a binge-worthy saga.
What hooked me onto it, is this newsletter:
Only Murders in the Building sees three strangers team up to solve a murder that has taken place in their NYC apartment complex, led by not just their shared obsession with a popular true-crime podcast but also by hidden individual motives that are revealed over the show’s 10-episode first season.
There is an entire world of characters and locations within a building. This is only heightened by the seductive and poetic persona of New York within the show's core.
Restraining myself from watching S2 to save myself from binge watching again but I don’t think I can hold it for too long.
In Goa’s pastéis de nata | Scroll
During my visit to Goa, I had the luxury to try these scrumptious-delectable-flaky pastéis de nata at Padaria Prazeres and they were delish af!
This article describes the history of the dish and before you jump into it, just look at them:
Like most Christian congregations of the era, they used huge quantities of egg whites to starch their cassocks, robes and habits, which left yolks to dispose. Thick yellow custard was an obvious option.
..At some point, the monks became especially fond of flaky little tartlets made with yolk-heavy egg custard.
Every time you have a first bite of a pastéis de nata, you go on a sugar high that obviously makes you smile, but after that you start automatically finding bridges with your memories in terms of presentation, consistency, smell, and flavour.
Read more about these cutesy tartlets and the cafe on this article or take a deep dive in the food scene at Goa, in this article.
That’s all for this time folks. Happy binging!
