5 Things I Consumed Last Week (another turn, another shift)
on em and the big hoom, black mirror, 50 ideas that changed my life, i'm bored and dissatisfied and how to start having more fun
Hello Nello!
This week’s title is from one of the top 10 songs on my ‘on repeat’ playlist last year (too late to the party for this song) called ‘One More Love Song’ (released 2017) by Mac De Marco. Lyrics are dripping with grief:
Another turn, another shift
One last kiss from her lips
Another dream you're putting down
After all this time, it turns out all you found
Is one more love out to break your heart
Set it up
Just to watch it fall apart
No, I am not heartbroken but it just had the right indie mix of sadness and a trippy vibe (yes to both) and umm well it really doesn’t have a lot to do with all the recommendations except that I found myself humming this song after long and I was gonna try to somehow relate the lyrics to the theme stating - ‘it might bring another shift to your mindset (dork alert)’ but I guess I would just urge you to listen to it and duck the theme. I hope you enjoy the issue nevertheless, cheers!

'I'm Bored and Dissatisfied and I Have No Idea What I Want From My Life!' | Ask Polly
I’m in that phase of my reading life where I despise reading self-help books but I find myself immediately attracted to any advice column like bee to honey. Ask Polly is no new news, it is an OG advice column since 2012 and obviously for a reason.
If you find yourself being ‘bleh’ about things lately, if you feel like you have reached a plateau in life and nothing seems exciting to you and you feel like a boat floating in this big ocean of to-do lists and goals for the day and if you feel like you need to read something uplifting, this is for you! Thank me later :)
Em and the Big Hoom | Jerry Pinto
I have not found myself glued to a book since a long time (okay since January) until Jerry Pinto happened to me. I lucked out on this treasure in my last book swap event.
Em and the Big Hoom was Jerry’s first novel (which makes it fiction?), though it reads very much like an entertaining yet deeply heartfelt memoir. This is a novel about mental illness.
Written from the young adult son’s perspective, he presents a story which is both a celebration of his mother, Imelda’s infuriating mad life (read schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder), and an attempt to understand both her and her relationship with his father.
The novel is set in 1960s Bombay, India and the family are anglophile Catholics which add a colourful and engaging context to the story.
Excellent writing, highly recommend.
50 Ideas That Changed My Life | David Perell
David’s 50 ideas are like reels for written content except that it is much more intellectually stimulating (at least for me, okay fine - except cute puppies)
If there is an MBA for mindset training, this could be the index. These are 50 random concepts joined together, a primer for you to go down the rabbit hole - whichever you like. Like this?!
Convexity: If you want to be lucky, look for opportunities with big upsides and low downsides. In addition to increased optionality, your errors will benefit you more than they harm you. Convex payoffs let you tinker your way to success and innovation.
Black Mirror - Season 6 | Netflix
For those of you who haven’t watched Black Mirror yet - the premise is to depict prophetic visions of humanity’s future mostly rooted on ultra-advanced technology.
The sixth season of this anthology series is filled with stories that shine a spotlight on numerous dark corners of society, from consciousness getting transmitted from space to our reliance on streaming services and media consumption.
I have watched only 2 episodes yet and there were certainly some highlights but overall the storytelling seems a bit muted as compared to previous seasons. Let’s see if this opinion changes after 4 more episodes.
What’s your verdict if you have watched it?
How to start having more fun | Psyche
At the expense of being a hypocrite and telling you one recommendation back that I despise self-help, I clicked on this only because I wanted to see how someone can make a guide on how to start having fun. (easily drawn to structure, being a consultant professionally)
I can’t deny that the article delivers quite well on the title. Okay I am kidding. It’s extremely didactic and I almost found myself dozing halfway through it.
Read it and let me know at what point you dozed off. 😴
Turning the tables to the fun side

Is this Barbie movie worth watching? (honest reviews only please)

That’s all for this time folks! See you next week.
