5 Things I Consumed Last Week (all in one)
on stupidity, advice, assortment, asking and the economics of..
Dear reader,
I have been feeling confused with a lot of things. Finding your calling seems so liberating and yet frustrating at the same time. My mailbox feels attacked with the amount of random mails I send these days but I think life is all about this - ‘Figuring’.
This issue is a mish-mash like my personality, choose what stands out for you.
Note: If my emails end up in the ‘promotions’ tab, please move them to the inbox so you don’t miss out.
The Economics of by Wall Street Journal (You Tube videos)
My pedigree as a CA aspirant forces me to be abreast with nerdy digs on documentaries, businesses and economics. This one is a very old find but if you did know about it there you go. WSJ is an absolute gem for well written articles and it’s YT channel is no less.
‘The Economics of’ is a video series dedicated to trivia stories about well-known companies. Short, crisp videos to give you enough content to strike a conversation (if you are around business enthusiasts or if you are pretending to be a nerd in parties).

How to be Exuberant on Ask Polly by Heather Havrilesky (Essay)
If there’s something I really want you to read in this newsletter, THIS IS IT!
There’s a lot wrapped up in that kind of I DON’T WANT ANYTHING, I’M TOO TIRED state. It’s not just depression. It’s a mind that does too much work all day, circling endlessly, telling you you’re a sulky failure, a lazy piece of shit, a needy lump. Your story tells you that you should want things, but you have no drive.
If you are feeling tired, burnt-out or demotivated lately, gives this a read.
I know I might appear as the cheerleader of team motivation on social media but I do procrastinate and I do feel nihilistic, confused and frustrated it takes a lot to get out of that zone.
Heather is the writer of Ask Polly, the OG advice column in The New Yorker. In this issue she talks about Exuberance as an anti-dote to get over sluggishness.
If you don’t break your habit of experiencing each day as a series of things to avoid or get through, the future will look just like the past: Your brain will still be torturing you the whole time.
Movie Mania
I am not a movie buff and I don’t understand a lot of meme references from movies but I am trying to make up now. I watched a few movies this week. Some classics, some artsy.
Forrest Gump
I know I know I am too late for this! Pardon me.
But if you haven’t watched it yet, what are you waiting for?!
Funny. Heartwarming. Emotional. Motivating. Nuanced.
Stupid is as stupid does. ~ Forrest Gump.
The story of a mentally challenged man and his adventures played by Tom Hanks. The performance is a breathtaking balancing act between comedy and sadness, in a story rich in big laughs and quiet truths.
Columbus
There are some movies which don’t have a killer story line but are shot beautifully and the magic lies in the details. In this movie, it’s about the ARCHITECTURE.
It’s remarkable how little actually happens in this delicate account of a fleeting connection between two people temporarily adrift in the city of Columbus, Indiana. In its precision – the framing of each shot is as eloquent as the dialogue – and measured pacing, Columbus is a balm, a deep tissue massage for the soul. ~ The Guardian
Romantic. Charming. Mesmerizing. Poetics of Place. Love letter to modernism.
Movie buffs who wait for a climax might be disappointed but for those who, like me, love both pensive arthouse cinema, it’s a rare treat.
Asking Too Much by Andrea Gibson (Poetry)
A wonderful mediation of asking too much on a first date (at least in your mind). Read the full poem here.
I wanna know what you see when you look in the mirror on a day you’re feeling good
I wanna know what you see in the mirror on a day a day you’re feeling bad
I wanna know the first person who ever taught you your beauty could ever be reflected on a lousy piece of glass
If you ever reach enlightenment, will you remember how to laugh?Have you ever been a song?
Would you think less of me if I told you I have lived my entire life a little off key
and I’m not nearly as smart as my poetry
I just plagiarized the thoughts of the people around me who have learned the wisdom of silence
